The Development Activities Program (DAP) was one that helped me open up, gain immense self-confidence and prepare myself for various challenges sure to come my way in the future. The whole process of teaching exposed me to collaboration with older adults, teenagers and younger children, an experience which taught me that working with new people should be welcome and is not nearly as daunting as it once seemed. During my time in the program, I realized that my own privilege set me up for significantly more opportunities than those available to the students there. Things I take for granted like conversational English were simply not offered and needed to be taught in order to open them up to more options in the future. The disparity in the socio-economic strata became evident and our responsibility to empathize with people around us, bringing them up as we move forward with life was an important lesson I took back with me. The complete journey of the DAP gave me a widened - and slightly more worldly - perspective, enabling me to understand my responsibility towards society to give back and gain confidence in myself to face any challenges I encounter head-on, an experience I’ll keep for a lifetime.
